Russia: US Prepares Al Qaeda and ISIS Militias to Attack Moscow
Russia's foreign spy service, SVR, said on Monday February 13, 2023 it had received intelligence that the United States military was preparing Islamist militants to attack targets in Russia and the former Soviet Union.
Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, which is led by an ally of President Vladimir Putin, said it had intelligence that 60 militants from groups affiliated with Daesh (ISIS) and Al-Qaeda had been recruited and were undergoing training at American bases in Syria.
The agency did not publish intelligence behind its statements and Reuters was unable to independently verify it.
The SVR, once part of the mighty Soviet-era KGB, is led by Sergei Naryshkin who met CIA Director William Burns last year in Ankara.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine pushed relations with the United States to their lowest level since the Cold War crisis.
Putin has called the United States an empire that has repeatedly refused to take into account Russia's interests since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. President Joe Biden has described Putin as an autocrat who poses a grave threat to the United States.
